A photo straight from a phone or camera can be several megabytes — too big to email comfortably and heavy enough to slow down a website. Resizing and compressing it gives you a much smaller file with no visible drop in quality.

There are two ways to make an image smaller. First, reduce its dimensions (pixels): a photo doesn't need to be 4000 pixels wide to look great on a website — 1600 or 1920 pixels is usually plenty. Second, lower the quality slightly: dropping to around 70–80% cuts the file size a lot while staying visually sharp. Using both together gives the biggest reduction.
JPEG, WebP or PNG?
For photos, JPEG gives small files and works everywhere. WebP is more modern and often smaller at the same quality, and it supports transparency. Use PNG only when you need crisp edges or transparency (like logos and screenshots) — for photos, PNG files are unnecessarily large.
