How to Validate a Business Idea Before You Build It

Talk to five real people

Not a survey — actual conversations with people who have the problem. Ask what they currently do about it, what they've tried, what it costs them in time or stress, and what they'd want instead. Your job is to listen, not to pitch. You're checking one thing above all: does this problem actually hurt, or is it just mildly annoying? Painkillers sell; vitamins struggle.

Define the smallest testable offer

Strip your idea down to the smallest thing you could deliver next week for money — not the grand vision, just the first useful slice. Small offers are easier to say yes to, easier to deliver, and easier to fix if they're wrong. You can expand later; you can't un-waste three months.

Ask for a real yes, not a polite one

This is the heart of validation, and the step people skip because it's uncomfortable. Compliments are free; commitment is proof. A real yes is someone booking a call, leaving a deposit, or saying 'send me an invoice.' When a friendly contact says they love the idea, follow up with 'great — can I start this week?' The gap between those two answers is the truth about your business.

Read the signals honestly

After a week you'll have one of three results. Several people said yes and one paid or pre-committed: green light, go build. Lots of interest but nobody will commit: yellow — fix the offer or price. Shrugs and vague maybes: red — change the idea. And weigh strangers far more heavily than friends and family, who will love it because they love you.
